Cathy O’Neil attended UC Berkeley, where she completed her undergraduate degree. She went on to receive her Ph.D. in mathematics from Harvard University in 1999. After graduating from Harvard, Cathy held positions in the mathematics departments of MIT and Barnard College. Here she did research in arithmetic algebraic geometry. Cathy left academia in 2007 and worked four years in the finance industry including two years at the hedge fund D.E. Shaw. After her brief employment in the finance industry, Cathy became involved in the Occupy Wall Street movement, participating in its Alternative Banking Groups.
