pgEdge, a Virginia-based company specializing in distributed database solutions based on PostgreSQL, announced $10 million in new funding. The investment will be used to expand the company’s operations and further develop its advanced distributed Postgres technology.

The funding round was led by Rally Ventures, with additional contributions from existing investors Sands Capital Ventures and Grotech Ventures.

pgEdge claims that it is the only fully distributed PostgreSQL database that is both open-source and entirely based on standard PostgreSQL. This enables the company to offer a unique solution for enterprises requiring ultra-high availability and reduced latency across geographically dispersed regions.

According to the 2024 Stack Overflow survey, PostgreSQL continues to be the most popular database amongst developers.  This is largely due to PostgreSQL’s reputation for reliability, scalability, and support for complex queries and operations.

pgEdge enhances PostgreSQL’s utility by incorporating multi-master (active-active) replication technology. Unlike traditional databases that remain centralized, pgEdge enables data to be distributed and optimized at the network edge.

Founded in 2022 by Phillip Merrick and Denis Lussier, pgEdge addresses the challenge of centralizing databases in a world where other software components are increasingly distributed. pgEdge’s mission is to provide an open-source, Postgres-based distributed platform for modern applications that require swift response times, continuous availability, and global access.

The pgEdge founders have extensive experience in the startup ecosystem. Lussier is the founder of OpenSCG, a startup acquired by AWS in 2018. Following the acquisition, he joined AWS as a Postgres product manager for Aurora and RDS. Merrick has several startup credentials, including cofounder of Enterprise DB, coinventor of VisualCV, CEO of Fugue, and CEO of Sparkpost.

Along with the new funding, pgEdge has also announced the joining of Ben Fried to the company’s Board of Directors. Fried is a former CIO of Google and MD of Morgan Stanley. He recently joined Rally Ventures in a full-time role as a Partner.

Rally Ventures is known for its investments in early-stage business technology startups, with a particular focus on companies that are creating significant new markets or introducing transformative approaches to existing ones.

In his 14-year tenure at Google, Fried played a pivotal role in overseeing the development and implementation of technologies that drive Google’s global enterprise operations. At Morgan Stanley, Fried designed the firm’s web technology platform and led software development infrastructure and business intelligence teams.

“pgEdge is at the forefront of innovation in distributed PostgreSQL, a technology that is increasingly critical for enterprises needing ultra-high availability and reduced latency across geographic regions,” said Fried.

“The company’s highly experienced leadership team, with a proven track record in scaling early-stage companies, coupled with the company’s industry-leading and open distributed Postgres technology, made this a compelling addition to our portfolio.”

Cofounder Merrick also shared his enthusiasm via the press release for the new funding and Fried’s onboarding. He is confident that the investment and expertise will advance pgEdge’s mission. He is confident that this investment and Fried’s expertise will advance pgEdge’s mission. Merrick emphasized that pgEdge’s strong revenue cycle and the addition of leading SaaS customers reflect the company’s growing momentum in the market.

The recent funding round for pgEdge underscores the dynamic nature of the distributed database and edge computing market. As companies like pgEdge, Cockroach Labs, and MongoDB vie for prominence, the influx of new capital could be the boost pgEdge needs to further innovate and expand its database solutions.
